SHORT S- 25 SANDRINGHAM 7 (BERMUDA)

This remarkable aircraft began its career as a Sandringham 3 maritime patrol aircraft with the RAF Coastal Command in 1944. Following the end of WW II, it was converted to a civilian airliner for BOAC & redesignated a Sandringham 7. In British airline service it was know by the class name "Bermuda". After being sold to an Australian operator in 1954, RAI, Based at Papeetee, Tahiti, acquired the aircraft in 1958 for services to such places as BOra Bora. Raiatea & Huahine. Finally retired from service in 1970, it is now on display at the Musée de L'Air Bourget, just outside Paris. Built by Short Brothers & Harland Limited at Rochester, Northumberland, England. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-1830-D-92 engines & de Havilland Hydromatic propellers.

SHORT SANDRINGHAM

What a terrific shot of this majestic flying boat! It's departing Lake Eucumbene on a pleasure flight the passengers all being avid aviation enthusiasts from Melbourne. Though listed as a Sandringham it is actually a converted Sunderland of the RNAF. NZ4108 refers. Ansett used it on the Sydney Rose Bay to Lord Howe Island service. named 'Islander' it was photographed in November 1972. As late as 1984, it had flown to Rochester, in Kent where plans are in hand to have it preserved although other reports suggests it may return to Australia.
